Three Ways to Purify the Air Inside Your House Using Plants

Plants scattered around the living room are a nice thing to behold. Relaxing even. But did you know they can also clean the air you breathe at home? That is not rocket science. We have studied photosynthesis in school. Plants take the carbon dioxide that we exhale. In return, it gives off oxygen which is essential for our very existence.

Backstory:

In 1989, NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) fielded a study on how plants can clear volatile organic chemicals (VOC) inside the house. Those harmful chemicals are found in products like air fresheners and paint. These VOCs can cause lung, kidney, and liver failure; even cancer.

So, NASA wanted to know whether in-house plants can mitigate this. To make the long story short, the plants did a fantastic job in a controlled environment. However, out in the real world where the environs are unpredictable, the effect is significantly less. Miniscule the result might be, plants are still a great to have inside the house. Which is why we are going to discuss where you can put them where they’ll look nice and accentuate the storage solution baked into each section of the house.

The Shelving Space

We almost never fill our wall shelves with stuff. Wall shelves are there to be available storage spaces for books, and some design ornaments. A nice way to fill the gaps of the EKBY/OSTEN shelf might be the tiny IKEA NYPON plant pot. Then plant is with something that doesn’t need watering much to keep the space clean. As minimalist as it is, it adds life to a rather utilitarian shelf. Add a handful of these plants in your living room, and maybe hallway, to lighten up the mood.

The BOTKYRKA wall shelf is another attractive storage solution especially if you have a small kitchen. It can be placed above the sink to easily place clean plates and bowls. And right on the edge, place a SKURAR plant pot just to liven things up. Remember, plants give off oxygen so breathe. Mundane a task it might be, a plant eases washing dishes because it’s refreshing to look at.

Now, not a lot of kids understand gardening and photosynthesis. But since the effects of plants inside the home have been made known, place a plant or two inconspicuously on his toy shelf. The LUSTIGT for example. A smaller NYPON plant pot can be placed on the shelves. Who knows, your child might even enjoy playing with it; imagining it is a tree for his toys.

Bookcases and Dividers

You are all familiar with the KALLAX shelving unit. It’s a great piece that can be used as a divider. And you can fill those holes with SKURAR plant pots and tiny plants. The smaller 2x2 KALLAX shelving unit is great for hallways. This calls for an even smaller plant pot to make the air purifying a bit subtle. The DAIDAI plant pot is the answer.

As its name suggests, the BILLY bookcase is made for books. But this iconic bookcase can also be a breeding ground for your minimalist air purifiers. For these, the VINTER plant pot will do quite nicely. A bookcase filled with volumes is never boring for some people. But with an added outdoorsy vibe such as plants, everyone might just appreciate a good read.

Inside the bathroom, a plant is but natural. Place a SOCKER plant pot atop your RAGRUND or DYNAN shelf simply because there is virtually nobody who would put anything on the top shelf. It’s quite nice to think that something as natural as a plant is there with you while you do natural things.

Get it on the Floor

Not all plants are made equal. So are plant pots. The SENAP can be placed on the floor for plants that are quite big. Thus, they can be placed on one side of the bed so you’ll wake up breathing fresh air. However, if you want multiple plants that wouldn’t take up a lot of space, the IKEA PS 2014 plant stand and the SATSUMAS are as good as it gets. For pure aesthetics, the older IKEA PS 2012 is a good place to think about hydroponics. But if you are into Gothic sort of things, you can let it be known by choosing the FOREMAL terracotta plant pot. A little creepy, yes. But it might keep kids away from destroying a lovely snake plant.

Do keep in mind that you need to take of these plants while they take care of you purifying the air you breathe. With that, the IKEA VATENKRASSE watering can will do all your plants’ watering needs. But if you cannot simply be bothered about the air you breathe or keeping something alive, then have an artificial plant from our FEJKA collection.
