A Tiny 21 Square Meter Studio Apartment with All the Storage Solutions You Need
Because big ideas for small spaces are what we’re good at, we will take you to a trip to one of the busiest, if not the busiest, urban community in the world: New York. This city is essential to us urbanites’ home storage solutions because if you can make it there, you can make it everywhere.
Lest you be confused, we wouldn’t take you out on a city tour. Rather, we would feature one home that we found, at the same time, odd and interesting. A 21 square foot studio apartment, small by New York standards, hides among the historic community that is Brooklyn. What is amazing about this home is the efficient use of space. Nothing is out of place and everything is in place. It is tiny. And yet it is comfy and airy. The owner’s biggest challenge is perhaps the small space. She said that designing the innards of her home is a bit like playing tetris. We will find out how she did it. Shall we?
First we come inside the living room where you will find an efficient use of the vertical space. You’ll find IKEA EKBY JARPEN/LERBERG shelves that hold books. As we all know, using the wall’s real estate means more floor space. The next thing we noticed are the rows of IKEA TRONES shoe cabinets on the other side of the wall. It can store anything aside from shoes. They are shallow enough not to protrude too much from the wall and invade space. The top portion of the rows of shoe cabinets is an additional shelf for more stuff. Display items are, well, displayed using the BOTKYRKA which is easily a two-tiered shelf. You see that brown thingy on the wall? That is a folding chair to be kept that way when not in use. We have one just like it and it is called the TERJE.
Next we move on to he small kitchen which has everything you need to make everyday dishes. It even includes a KUNGSFORS magnetic knife rack to make efficient use of the space. In a space this small, it is a welcome touch. That tiny kitchen leads us to a diminutive bathroom which feels cozy and well-appointed.
Finally, we head to a minimalist of a bedroom. Another EKBY shelf can be found in the with more books. Therefore we can conclude that wall shelves are the solution for bookworms who live in a small urban setting. The bed is tall enough to have SKUBB storage boxes under the bed to store winter garments in the summer and vice versa without the clutter.
There you go, a Polly Pocket-sized home arranged using extraordinary Tetris skills. If this can be done in New York, surely it can be done here in New Zealand.
