Living in a Small One-room Apartment is no Problem for a Minimalist
Dwelling in an urban apartment can be quite discomforting at first. You’ll have less space to live with, especially if you just live by your lonesome. But with the city right at her doorstep, 25 square meters seems like all the space Yvet needs to be cosy in her home.
She accounts of her story. ‘‘It’s rare to find a big space for a small amount of money in the city. My generation’s become used to living tiny!” Yvet states. Which is really nothing to scoff at since an IKEA report has found out that 64% of people would pick life in a small home in an ideal location than a large home in the middle of nowhere. “I streamlined what I owned and learned to get the most I could out of the space I did have,” she added.
In a small space, you’d have to get creative. For example, Yvet did away with the sofa leaning against the wall. Instead she placed in the middle of the room. Then she commissioned AINA curtains as a divider into her ‘bedroom’. “It seems crazy that I’d want to make a small space even smaller, but I wanted to turn the sleep area into a cozy den at night, and have the option of hiding the bed during the day,” says Yvet. “I shopped for room dividers but none fit, so I came up with this myself!”
“Big pieces can make or break a small space,” says Yvet. And she could not be more wrong. If you want to entertain guests but lack the floor space to do so, an element of fun and minimalism must be established. “I can’t have a huge armchair just because it looks nice. I’m conscious and choose pieces with multiple uses, such as stools that stack and double as a table or plant stand. And a timeless look means I can bring them with me to my next home,” Yvet shares. And because of that mindset, the ALSEDA banana fiber stool comes into play.
Now we go to the sustenance area: the kitchen. “In a tiny kitchen you’re forced to be organized! But that’s really nice, because it creates a routine,” says Yvet. We could use the wall space and have KUNGSFORS kitchen rails and hanging bulky kitchen items on hooks instead of a space-evading shelf.
Want to know more about Yvet? Well, like us, she loves coffee. She also loves photography. And we will leave you with this: “I freelance for a website creating city guides, so let me introduce you to some of my favourite Amsterdam spots… Go to Back to Black for good coffee. For photography lovers, explore the Huis Marseille museum and get your camera set for the Hortus Botanicus botanical garden. And say hi to us at The Gathershop, a lifestyle and homeware store, where I’m a part-time sales assistant,” she said.
